SPARKLE – Reviving a City Tradition: SPARKLE Santa Barbara 4th of July Celebration
As Executive Director of SPARKLE—the Santa Barbara Patriotic Association—Mary led the community-driven revival of Santa Barbara’s Independence Day celebration, transforming it into one of California’s most memorable and inclusive events. With no startup budget, Mary successfully raised over $100,000 annually through grassroots marketing, sponsorships, and in-kind support, all while managing a team of 40+ dedicated volunteers.

The 1998 celebration drew over 100,000 people to the Santa Barbara waterfront and Stearns Wharf for a full day of family-friendly festivities, including live music at the West Beach Bandstand, artisan vendors, and interactive activities. Working closely with city departments—police, fire, parks & recreation—we coordinated all logistics, traffic closures, and public safety measures. The evening culminated in a 20-minute fireworks display over West Beach, choreographed to patriotic music and simulcast live on local radio station KjEE 92.9 FM.

SPARKLE not only brought back the “kabooms” but restored civic pride and created a signature event that united the community through celebration, collaboration, and creativity.

The First Tee of Greater Austin & Harvey Penick Golf Campus
Served as Fractional CMO overseeing full rebrand, event branding, signage, communications, direct marketing, social media management, and PR for both organizations. Secured a $50K donation for course signage, boosting community visibility, golf program registration, and donor engagement.

HAAM (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians)
Led marketing efforts for the annual HAAM Holiday HAAM Jam benefit album, securing $25K in sponsorship and $30K+ in record sales, while managing event planning and distribution partnerships.

Executive Women’s Golf Association (now LPGA Women Who Play)
Provided communications leadership and membership marketing for the Austin chapter, strengthening outreach and event participation.
